IHS is a private non-profit organization. It was founded in 1963 by two prominent Austrians living in exile, the sociologist Paul F. Lazarsfeld and the economist Oskar Morgenstern, with the financial help of the Ford Foundation, the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, and the City of Vienna. The institute carries out both basic research and applied and commissioned research. Several international rankings confirm the high quality of the scientific output of IHS researchers. IHS develops innovative solutions to current economic and sociopolitical problems. Profound theoretical knowledge is translated into high-quality applied research. The range of tasks covered in applied research at IHS is very broad and extends from economic and political analyses to sophisticated evaluations and feasibility studies. IHS projects are commissioned by banks, departments, government, companies, interest groups, and the European Commission.
